Rio Carnival is the carnival all others are compared to. It is the most famous carnival in the world and dates back to the late 1800’s. The biggest event of the whole carnival is the unique ‘Rio Carnival Parade’ or the ‘Samba Parade’ as it is also known. Each year between 3,000 and 5,000 dancers take part in this parade which is a competition between the leading samba schools. Each school prepares for the parade months in advance in the hope that they will be named the number one samba school. Every school has their own colour and the designs of their costumes and floats are designed around this theme, each design more elaborate and detailed than the last.
It is thought that over 500,000 overseas visitors will travel to Rio de Janeiro for this spectacular celebration of Brazil’s culture and passion for dancing. Along with the parades there are an array of Gala events and fabulous costume Balls. The Rio Carnival is described as an ‘experience of a lifetime’ and if you should ever get the opportunity to visit you will not be disappointed!
